Dr Mike Kelly

CEO & Founder

Dr Mike Kelly is a tech entrepreneur with a highly successful track record in the data centre sector. He founded and developed £1.3billion business TeleCity plc.  Most recently he established DataCentred Ltd, which is pioneering a new model of data centre, combining co-location services with next generation computer and storage solutions.

In the late 1990s Dr Kelly identified the opportunity to establish a pan-European colocation company and in 1998 founded TeleCity. With Dr Kelly as Chief Executive, Telecity achieved annual turnover of £32.5 million within three years of its founding and he designed and rolled out across Europe the first large data centres in Manchester, London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Amsterdam, Paris, Stockholm, Frankfurt and Munich. In 2000, TeleCity was floated on the London Stock Exchange at a value of £600 million and secured £120 million of fresh capital. At its peak then the company had a valuation of £1.6 billion, a pan European network of 18 data centres and employed 350 staff.

Since 2011, Dr Kelly focused on DataCentred. It is pioneering regional colocation services combined with Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) next generation computer and storage solutions. Essentially it is a best-in-class provider of robust, secure and carrier-rich facilities for companies to locate their internet, telecoms and IT infrastructure.  A critical part of the model is public-private cloud, and the presence of flexible IaaS within the facility, allows clients to run their own physical estate but easily access and use a tailored and secure private cloud. In time this facilitates cloud migration, but with reduced risk.

Dr Kelly has an MBA from the University of Manchester as well as a PhD in High Energy Physics from the University of Liverpool and a BSc from Imperial College. He is also a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the British Computer Society.
